Are you
using your weight to prove something or be right?
Sometimes
you continue to keep on extra pounds because there is some kind of
payoff. There may be reasons that you choose to hold on to your weight.
Staying
fat may actually have its benefits and work better for you. If you
find yourself reacting against this idea, just stay open-minded about
and notice if any of the following situations ring true for you. These
are just a few of the "good" reasons you may not really
want to lose weight.
- If you've
been overweight for a long time, you may have gotten negative attention
from your family and friends for it, and perhaps negative attention
being better than no attention at all, you've kept weight on for
fear of losing the attention that you get.
- If your
parents or spouse were constantly tell you to lose weight, your
keeping weight on may be your statement that you won't be told what
to do, even if it might benefit you.
- Prefer
to keep the problems you have rather than exchanging them for "new"
problems.
- If you
had your ideal body, would you create disapproval from friends,
and/or relatives? Are you keeping extra weight on because you're
afraid of making people jealous, or having other people think you're
"stuck-up?"
- Are you
keeping on extra weight in order not to be "disloyal"
to someone important to you? A kind of "comrades-in-battle"
situation?
- If you
had your ideal body, do you think you would be unbearably arrogant?
- Is your
weight the symbol of a power struggle between you and someone else?
